Can I upgrade my solar PV system is a question we get asked a lot?

The simple answer is Yes.

Your solar PV system is modular and as such each component of the system can be updated / upgraded as required. There is a more complicated answer which involves ensuring all the components are compatible and that they are sized correctly to ensure they work as a system, but that is your design / installers job.

The last few years have seen some very interesting developments in the solar PV world, which customers are starting to take advantage of. Adding battery storage to your existing system can now be done by placing the batteries outside on a wall rather than taking up space in your home, making battery storage more accessible for those without loft or under stair storage. As the options for electric vehicles increases and the price of new vehicles decreases, batteries are finding new uses with keeping the family run about charged so it’s ready when needed.

Changes in technology have also made it easier than ever before to add battery storage and optimise your system. Systems can now use current transformer (CT) clamps that go around your incoming electricity supply cable without interfering with the cables. The system can then use the information provided by the CT clamp to determine if the batteries should be charged, used to supply the household, charge the car or returned to the grid. All of this is seamless for the user and is managed within the system itself. The system charges the battery when is best for you and your tariff, then uses that stored energy in the most efficient way, either running your house, charging your car or returning to the grid when it benefits you. These options can be changed as your needs change. There is no need to run wires all over your house to make the system components work together, they can work as one integrated system even though they stand-alone.
